Google holds back its top-ranked model while Cloud, not Search, drives its growth

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28 and took first place on the composite index of Artificial Analysis, an organization that compares AI models, yet only a subset of cybersecurity defenders can use it for now. In Q3 results the same day, Google reported Search revenue growth sliding from 19% in Q1 to 17% in Q2 and 12% in Q3. Google Cloud, by contrast, grew 103% to $30.7 billion. On the same call, Google said it is taking AI search ads outside the US for the first time.

Microsoft booked $10 billion in revenue from OpenAI in the July–September quarter, about 11% of its quarterly revenue. Oracle's cloud made Nvidia's Vera Rubin system and a standalone Vera CPU generally available, with OpenAI as an early CPU customer. Meta announced a raise of up to $95 billion, with chip suppliers Nvidia putting in $3 billion and AMD $1 billion. Money and computing capacity keep circulating among a few AI companies and chipmakers.

Google opened Android Studio to rival agents such as Claude Agent and Codex. Nvidia released a free speech model that transcribes 40 languages. A Wired reporter's experiment that handed a fantasy soccer team to several agents, however, has not beaten the average for weeks. Agents are entering tools faster than they are producing results.

Gemini 4 Carbon: Our next frontier model

Summary

A model most people cannot use has taken first place on a leading AI ranking. Google's Gemini 4 Carbon, announced on October 28, scores 59 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, and for now only a subset of cybersecurity defenders can use it. It reaches 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, which tests finding vulnerabilities, and 54.8% on ExploitGym, which tests whether a vulnerability can actually be exploited. Introductory pricing is $2 per million input s and $10 per million output tokens, doubling to $4 and $20 later, and Google gave no date for general availability.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

The rollout order says more than the score does: Google is putting abilities that attackers could also use in defenders' hands first and delaying general release. According to AI Times, which reported the Artificial Analysis results, Claude Opus 5.5 scores 58 and GPT-6 Astra 57, so the lead is only one or two points. The same report says the rate rose from 4% for the earlier Gemini 4 Argon to 11%.

Google expands AI Search ads globally as core ad growth slows

Summary

Google is taking ads inside its AI search experiences outside the US for the first time. Alphabet said so on its Q3 earnings call on October 28, adding ads that persist through a conversation in the US version of AI Mode. Revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, but Search revenue growth fell from 19% in Q1 to 17% in Q2 and 12% in Q3, and the shares dropped 8%. Google said click-through rates on sponsored product listings in AI Mode already match those of organic listings.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Google is counting on AI answers to restart search ad growth, and early click-through rates are its main evidence so far. Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.7 billion in the same quarter, so the fastest growth is already coming from the cloud rather than Search.

Microsoft recorded $10 billion in revenue from OpenAI

Summary

Microsoft's revenue from OpenAI in a single quarter now exceeds 40% of what it booked from OpenAI in the whole prior fiscal year. In a regulatory filing, Microsoft said commercial arrangements with OpenAI brought in $10 billion in the July–September quarter. That is nearly 11% of its $92.3 billion quarterly revenue and a pace of about $40 billion a year, against $24.1 billion for all of the last fiscal year. OpenAI's unpaid balance to Microsoft rose from $6 billion at the end of June to $7.2 billion at the end of September.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Microsoft is now both an investor in OpenAI and a company that gets roughly 11% of its revenue from it. Its stake slipped from about 25% in June to 24% in September. OpenAI's business now feeds directly into Microsoft's results, even as the two firms compete for the same customers.

Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections

Summary

Google's AI Mode declined to say who won the 2020 US presidential election and told the user to consult Federal Election Commission records instead. An Ars Technica reporter asked on the morning of October 28 and got the same non-answer for 2024, while most other elections back to 2000 got a correct answer. Spot checks via VPN from Taiwan, Russia, France and Canada returned straight answers, and asking the same question a second time produced the winner. A Google spokesperson said there was a technical gap with 2020 election queries, as well as 2022 Senate races, and that a fix is under way.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Google's own Gemini app answers this question, and Google blamed a technical gap in how Search verifies election answers, which places the problem in Search rather than the model. A step meant to verify election answers ended up withholding a settled fact. AI Mode itself blamed strict safety filters, but Ars noted that AI models are unreliable at reporting on their own internal processes.

What to do now

If AI Mode only gives you links, ask the same question a second time or try the Gemini app.

Voice AI in vogue: Nvidia releases new open transcription model

Summary

Nvidia has released Nemotron 3.5 Transcribe, a free speech model that transcribes 40 languages. The 30-billion-parameter model runs on a single chip, translates 31 languages to and from English, and separates up to eight speakers in recordings up to an hour long. It handles recorded audio only, not livestreams. According to The Decoder, its average English on Hugging Face's Open ASR Leaderboard is 5.33%, first among open-weight models, just ahead of Qwen3-ASR-1.7B at 5.4%.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

The gap between first and second place is 0.07 percentage points, so the score alone does not show it is better for real work. The value is that transcription, translation and speaker separation run together on one chip, with an updated open speech dataset released alongside. Meeting minutes and medical dictation are the targets. It arrives in a busy stretch for voice AI, after Mistral's Voxtral 3 earlier this month.

What to do now

Before using it on work audio, test it on at least 100 verified recordings; The Decoder reports that Nvidia recommends this.

Nvidia and Oracle launch a Vera Rubin setup so GPUs stop sitting idle

엔비디아·오라클, '베라 루빈' 대규모 동맹…GPU 유휴 한계 넘는다

Summary

Oracle's cloud arm OCI has made Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 system and a standalone Vera CPU generally available. Announced on October 27, the setup lets customers scale s and CPUs separately to cut the time GPUs spend waiting for work. OpenAI is an early Vera CPU customer, using it for agent sandbox tasks. Nvidia claims up to 80% faster agent-related CPU work than major x86 processors, but that figure has not been verified on OCI instances.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Idle GPUs are not necessarily a CPU problem: if the bottleneck is the database or the application design, swapping CPUs alone may not fix it. Companies considering it should run the same agent workload on their current setup and the new one, and measure completion rate, response time and total cost, including model API fees.

I Put a Bunch of AI Agents in Charge of a Fantasy Soccer Team. They’re Not Better Than Humans—Yet

Summary

A Wired reporter handed a Premier League fantasy team to a group of AI agents, and for several weeks it has not beaten the average score. Codex's first suggestions included benching Erling Haaland. Splitting the work among agents that read news, analyze recent results, run prediction models and critique suggestions improved things noticeably. Raising the count past 100 agents changed little beyond the API bill.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Beyond the fantasy score, the Wired reporter expects big AI labs to turn to forecasting as a new way to measure machine intelligence. Haifeng Xu, a University of Chicago computer scientist, says an agent setup with divided roles works best for predictions. At the Metaculus Cup, AI sometimes beat even the best human forecasters. Yet in an experiment by Harvard and Arcada Labs researchers that gave models $10,000 to bet on prediction markets over 57 days, they kept losing money.

Google opens Android development to third-party AI agents and unveils new Gemini APIs

Summary

At the Android Dev Summit, Google introduced Bring Your Own Agent in Android Studio, which lets developers plug in more than 40 outside coding agents. Connections use the open (ACP), and Anthropic's Claude Agent, OpenAI's Codex and Google Antigravity can be installed from a built-in marketplace. The Android CLI is now an official plugin for Claude Code, Codex and Antigravity, and Google's internal tests found agents finished UI tasks 77% faster with up to three times fewer s when rendering previews in the terminal. The AppFunctions API, which lets apps expose their features to agents, is in beta and uses .

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Developers are no longer limited to Google's own AI tools in Android Studio, and rival agents connect through an open protocol rather than a Google one. Google keeps the IDE, the CLI and the app APIs whichever agent writes the code. Figures like 77% and three times come from Google's internal tests and have not been independently verified.

Meta announces a raise of up to $95 billion, with Nvidia and AMD joining

메타, AI 인프라 대규모 자금 조달…엔비디아 4조·AMD 1.3조 베팅

Summary

Meta announced on October 26 a plan to raise up to $95 billion to pay for AI infrastructure. It takes the form of a large share offering, and on October 27 Nvidia said it will invest $3 billion and AMD $1 billion. Both are investors and chip suppliers at once. Meta's Muse family of AI models and its AI agents currently run on Nvidia infrastructure, and Meta is expanding its use of Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems and Vera CPU.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Two chipmakers are buying shares in a customer that buys their chips. A good part of the money Meta raises could flow back to Nvidia and AMD, though the article does not say how the investments relate to chip purchases.

Microsoft is ending Copilot support on smart TVs

Summary

Microsoft is ending Copilot support on all LG and Samsung smart TVs this year. The news came not from an announcement but from an on-screen notice on a Windows Central writer's LG webOS TV, which said a specific end date depends on Microsoft's timeline. It comes less than two years after the companies announced at CES 2025 that their TVs would include Copilot. Last December LG added an unremovable Copilot shortcut and then allowed its removal after users complained.

Why it matters

Why It Matters

Earlier this year Microsoft launched a Copilot super app that bundles chat, agents and coding. It was part of a push to position Copilot as a business and productivity tool rather than a friendly companion. The TV version, a companion in the living room, is the one being dropped.
