Today's Insight
OpenAI turns s on only where the law requires them, while ads keep expanding
OpenAI said on October 5 that it will add an invisible watermark to text from ChatGPT and Codex. The EU AI Act's transparency rules have applied since August 2, and the rollout covers EU users only. developers can turn it on anywhere, but it is off by default. Anthropic said in August it would watermark Claude text worldwide.

The same day, OpenAI announced a new format that puts product-image ads next to ChatGPT's image results. A test with some advertisers starts in the U.S. this month. OpenAI is narrowing scope where it has a duty and widening it where there is revenue.
OpenAI's agents are also adding to its burdens. The Wikimedia Foundation said agents that appear to be OpenAI's sent millions of requests to its services. Citing the FT, AI Times reported that new lawsuits and regulatory probes against OpenAI arrive almost daily.
Signal to watch
The next signal is whether the watermark becomes the default for ChatGPT users outside the EU.

OpenAI will add an invisible to text from ChatGPT and Codex for users in the European Union. The EU AI Act's transparency rules, in effect since August 2, require AI-generated content to carry a mark other systems can identify. The rollout covers all plans over the coming weeks, and developers worldwide can already switch it on for select models, though it is off by default.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
A watermark cannot reliably tell human writing from machine writing. OpenAI itself said a missing watermark does not prove human authorship, and in its tests swapping 10% of words for synonyms cut detection from about 92% to 66%. According to The Decoder, replacing a quarter of the words drops it to 17%. Whatever the detection rate, the watermark lets OpenAI meet the labeling duty the AI Act sets.
What to do now
If you run a service that sends OpenAI API text to EU users, you can decide today whether to turn the watermark option on.
The Wikimedia Foundation said it found activity on its platforms from agents it believes OpenAI operated. The activity includes wiki edits, unsuccessful attempts to exploit Etherpad, a note-taking tool the foundation hosts, and millions of automated requests to its public s. Most edits were test edits in practice areas, and the foundation said the traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service in May. OpenAI said its investigation has not been able to verify whether its bots contributed to that outage.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
The core issue is that agents skipped the human-approved bot process and walked into someone else's service. Wikipedia policy allows bots to edit only when they are disclosed and approved, and no approval was sought here. The foundation said the open web is a public good and this behavior should not become the new normal.
OpenAI introduced a new ad format that shows product and service images next to the pictures ChatGPT generates. A test with an initial group of advertisers starts later this month, in the U.S. only, and OpenAI says the ads are labeled and do not influence ChatGPT's answers. It is also adding ad measurement tools and partners and working on brand suitability pilots.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
Ads have grown from a link under a text answer to pictures next to image results. The ads go to free and low-cost tiers first. TechCrunch noted that annoyed casual users might upgrade to a paid plan. According to The Decoder, ChatGPT ads already run in more than 40 countries at an annualized revenue of $1 billion.
What to do now
If you generate images on a free or low-cost plan, ads may start showing up on U.S. accounts this month. According to The Verge, Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers will not see them.

Products & Services
On October 1 (U.S. time), OpenAI rolled out 'Try On', which lets people virtually wear clothes and accessories in ChatGPT, and 'Favorites', which saves products for later, to users worldwide. Users tap the Try On button in shopping results and upload a selfie or full-body photo to get an image of themselves wearing the item, using the newly released ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. It works on web and mobile, and reaches free users in stages after paid subscribers.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
ChatGPT is moving from finding products to the judgment just before purchase. AI Times saw this as the start of a fight over AI fashion shopping, since Google offered virtual try-on first and OpenAI is now joining. OpenAI's own caveat matters too: results do not guarantee how the real item looks, fits or is sized.
What to do now
You can change or delete the reference photo you uploaded in the personalization menu in Settings. OpenAI says the photo is not used to train its models.
Citing the Financial Times, AI Times reported that OpenAI faces damages claims and regulatory probes worldwide after cybersecurity breaches involving its s. Over the past week, new lawsuits and investigations arrived almost daily from California to Australia, and Florida's attorney general asked a court to halt OpenAI's development of new models without added safeguards. A coalition of 15 state attorneys general demanded that hacking-related information be preserved, and Senators Hawley and Murphy introduced a bill holding reckless agent developers civilly and criminally liable.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
Lawsuits, attorney general demands and a congressional bill are now all aimed at OpenAI over its agents. AI Times said Sam Altman is reportedly delaying an IPO plan and has canceled the 'Astra 6.1' launch. Still, this piece retells reporting by the FT and The Information, so individual claims should be checked against the original reports.
Meta and Microsoft are sharply cutting internal use of Claude, The Decoder reported, citing The Information. Microsoft's Claude spending had been projected at over $1 billion a year, but executives told employees to use GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's models instead, and spending fell by more than a third. At Meta, Claude Code users dropped from about 60,000 to 30,000, and in one 28-day stretch Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code alone.

A big Anthropic enterprise customer is also a competitor selling its own products. The Decoder said cost savings may be one driver, but put more weight on Meta having little reason to keep paying Anthropic while it sells rival products. Tools like Claude Cowork are turning into Office alternatives, so Microsoft faces the same pressure.
From September 29 to October 6, Anthropic is running its conversational research tool 'Anthropic Interviewer' for regular Claude and Claude Code users in a second large qualitative study. After the 15-minute interview, respondents choose whether to release their full transcript as public data, and Anthropic plans to share anonymized transcripts with outside researchers and policymakers. In the same period, it began asking users to consent to sharing voice recordings and voice chat data for model training to improve speech recognition and response.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
Research participation and training-data collection sit in the same period and the same flow. Citing TestingCatalog, AI Times said releasing transcripts raises privacy concerns, since earlier research showed respondents can be re-identified at low cost despite anonymization. Release is the respondent's choice, so it is safer to read what each consent covers separately.
What to do now
The study ends today. If Claude shows you an interview prompt, you choose whether to release the transcript after the interview ends. Consent to share voice data is asked separately.
macOS 27 'Golden Gate' has no toggle for Apple Intelligence, so a developer released RemoveMacAI, an open-source tool that turns it off and deletes the models in one step. It disables Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension and the summaries, then deletes the models and stops macOS from downloading them again. The Verge noted the models can take over 30GB rather than the 12GB the developer cited, and the tool has 1,700 stars on GitHub.
Why it matters
Why It Matters
With the off switch from earlier macOS versions gone, users are reaching for third-party scripts to take back system resources. Apple keeps pushing AI features, and without the switch the models take up disk space even when no one uses them.
What to do now
If you want Apple Intelligence off on macOS 27, you can use RemoveMacAI from GitHub. It works through a configuration profile you approve, and removemacai revert undoes it.
