Nvidia buys Hugging Face, the GitHub of AI, for $13 billion
Nvidia has agreed to acquire open-source AI hub Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. The platform, used by 18 million developers, hosts 3 million open-weight models. Hugging Face turned down a $500 million investment from Nvidia last year at a $7 billion valuation, and is now being bought outright for nearly double that valuation just a year later. The deal, Nvidia's largest acquisition ever, surpassing its $6.9 billion Mellanox deal, still needs regulatory approval and is expected to close in the first half of 2027.

How to Run a Chatbot on Your Own Computer
Wired published a guide to running a chatbot directly on your own computer. Keeping data off the cloud protects privacy and avoids subscription fees, but you have to handle updates yourself. Beginners are pointed to the free app LM Studio Bionic, and having at least 8 GB of RAM, ideally 32 GB or more, plus a graphics card with over 8 GB of VRAM, lets you run bigger and faster models.

Report: Nvidia to acquire AI model repository Hugging Face for $13 billion
Nvidia is reportedly working to acquire open AI model repository Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, The Information reported. Hugging Face is a place where developers search for, download, and fine-tune open-weight models before uploading them back, playing a role similar to what GitHub does for software. Other companies including Salesforce had also tried to acquire it, and Nvidia previously invested in Hugging Face alongside Google and Microsoft, but the deal is still under negotiation and not yet final, a source confirmed to CNBC.

'Uncensored' Qwen 3.8 Now Runs on a MacBook, No Nvidia GPU Required
Developer Jonathan Coretti released an 'uncensored' version of Alibaba's open Qwen 3.8 model, which has 27 billion parameters, with its safety guardrails significantly weakened, on Hugging Face. Packaged in the GGUF format, it needs just 16GB of memory to run directly on an Apple Silicon MacBook, no cloud service or Nvidia GPU required.

The Powerful Chinese AI Model Experts Warned About Is Here
Chinese AI company Z.ai released an open-weight model called GLM 5.3 last Friday, claiming coding and hacking-automation performance that nears — and on some cybersecurity benchmarks exceeds — the best closed models from Anthropic and OpenAI. Alongside it, Z.ai launched OpenVuln, a vulnerability-scanning service, giving companies a cheaper way to find security holes in their own systems, though the same capability could just as easily be used offensively. Access is currently limited to trusted security partners, with full release planned in two weeks.

China's GLM-5.3 finds serious security flaw in Cursor, proving AI's offensive security chops
China's Z.ai found that its open-weight model GLM-5.3 uncovered a potentially serious security vulnerability in the coding platform Cursor, AI Times reported August 16. Z.ai developer advocate Lou said on X on August 14 that assigning GLM-5.3 a complex reverse-engineering task surfaced the flaw. Lou reported the finding to Cursor, and the two companies are now working together to fix it.

Chinese AI takes over Hugging Face: Qwen tops 2 billion downloads, 150,000 derivative models
Chinese AI companies are rapidly overtaking the US in the open-source ecosystem, AI Times reported August 16. According to Hugging Face's 'State of Open Models 2026' report released August 14, Alibaba's Qwen alone topped 2 billion downloads this year and grew to 151,448 derivative models — 4.7 times more than Meta's Llama. Over the same period, the platform's total public model repositories grew from 2.43 million to 2.96 million.

Alibaba releases 'Qwen3.8-Max' weights, requiring a license for commercial use
Alibaba released the weights for its flagship 'Qwen3.8-Max' model on August 13 — a 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, marking the first time Alibaba has released weights for a top-tier model. It's not fully free, though: large businesses with over $50M in trailing 12-month revenue must purchase a separate commercial license to commercialize the model as a service or work assistant. Internal research use, or use that doesn't expose output externally, is exempt.

Alibaba releases 'Qwen3.8-27B' weights, claiming Claude Opus 4.6-level performance
Alibaba fully released the weights for its lightweight 'Qwen3.8-27B' model — 27 billion parameters — under the Apache 2.0 license on August 15. Alibaba claims the model matches Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 on major benchmarks, and specifically outperforms Meta's Muse Glimmer 30B on real-world coding and office tasks. It's commercially usable, and developers can download it to run directly on personal computers or servers.
