This Week's Synthesis

This week AI companies were pressed more by demands to have their own claims verified from outside than by new features

OpenAI was pressed for outside checks all week. It turned watermarks on by default only in the European Union, where the law requires it, and its math manuscripts, revenue and safety claims all ended up needing outside verification. Google first eased the burden AI had added on tipsters and free users.

Late in the week the problem moved to controlling agents. On Friday Anthropic said it would turn off internet access for all internal evaluations, Microsoft's Nadella urged containing models from the start, and the White House made incident reporting mandatory for AI companies. The week's weight fell on who checks what AI does, not on model competition.
